Since being introduced to sea glass years ago, I've loved the idea of it and the meaning behind owning a piece.
I live fairly close to Charmouth beach on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset- whilst it is renowned for fossils, it also contains a treasure trove of sea glass to be found. All the sea glass in my jewellery has been found by me (or my boyfriend or mum!) from Charmouth Beach.
SEA GLASS
So let's get on to the properties behind sea glass and why I believe it to be so meaningful. Sea glass starts off as a sharp, rough shard of glass. It takes many, many years for the natural ways of the ocean to present what we then find as sea glass. The currents, movement of the waves, along with the salty water all combine to smooth the sharp edges of the glass and create something beautiful. For an object to be transformed in such a way from the natural elements, it seems to me to feel infused with the energy of the ocean. Even if you are not a believer of energy and healing properties, the metaphor that this piece of glass represents is powerful enough.
Given the magic of sea glass, I love creating with these pieces, something beautiful. It is also important to note that as sea glass is not naturally occurring, picking up sea glass from the beaches is retrieving the waste that was once discarded there. It is therefore not mined, unlike crystals, but instead a naturally recycled piece which makes it a very sustainable focal point for our jewellery.
When I create my sea glass jewellery, we are essentially cleaning up the beach, finding a lovely piece of naturally frosted sea glass, encasing it with recycled sterling silver, to carry the magic of the elements with us whenever we need.
